An avid gardener will go overboard when getting tools for the garden. He can get carried away with the different kinds of pruners, shovels, diggers and garden tiller that he will find in the store. If the tools will make the job easier and more efficiently, there is no reason why they should not indulge. But they should remember that tools will need storage space. There is no need to fill up the garage or garden shed with unnecessary tools.

There are only a few tools you will really need. Shovels are perfect for a lot of garden chores like edging beds, moving soil and planting holes. A hand trowel is great for planting small plants in containers or in soil beds. Get a good quality one made of stainless steel with rubberized grip for comfort. It will be well worth the higher price that you will pay for it. Digging fork, hoe, rake are standard tools that a gardener should have. Bypass pruners are necessary for all kinds of jobs around the garden, including deadheading, gentle shaping, and removing spent foliage. Of course, a good serviceable water hose is indispensable.
